MS 3 Social Justice Project!! First due date Sept 23rd!

Purpose: It is not enough to become educated in historical injustice- we learn from them on how to act on current and future injustice in the world, and it does require action. You will need to get involved in order to make changes happen and to see that you can have an impact.

Method: This project will consist of three parts: 1. Research different social justice causes that have a presence in this area
2. Join, participate, and journal about your experience helping this cause, and
3. write a report and present your experience to the class at the end of the school year.

Time Commitment: The project will take you a bit of time to complete, so it is the only major project of its kind. It will take the most time during your participation (step 2) but should not exceed more than 2 hours a week.

Grading: This final project is 20% of your grade, and will count towards both first and second semesters, based on how well you complete your check points for each stage.

Time Line for Project (all dates are subject to change as needed)
Sept. 23rd: Worksheet #1 is due (list of possible causes)

Oct. 14th: Worksheet #2 is due (your choice for the cause you will adopt)

Nov. 23rd: First Journal entry and worksheet is due

Jan. 6th: Second Journal entry and worksheet is due (mid-way grading)

March 17th: Third and Final Journal entry and worksheet due

April 21st: Report Rough Draft due

May 12th: Final Reports and presentation due

MS 1 Western Civilizations Project--approval deadline Sept 16th!!

Contributions of Western Civilizations Project

We will be studying several important civilizations this quarter, (Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and Rome) and the major religions (Judaism, Islam, and Christianity). You could study each of these civilizations for a year, but you will be focusing on one and its long-term contributions to the Western World for your project.

Steps to your Project’s Success:
1. Focus on one civilization/religion. Which civilization do you find most interesting? You don’t have to wait until we get to the civilization to find out something about it (look at the posters in our room, for example)- decide which one you would like to focus on.

2. Research: You will next need to read a bit about these in our book and/ or other sources to figure out the long-term contributions to our society. This is important: you must not only focus on an accomplishment of that society, but also a way it has impacted the civilizations that followed.

3. Pick your medium: Now you have to pick how you want to present the information. Here are some ideas (not all!):
Make a model Write a report Use video, powerpoint
Design a game Make a scrapbook Create a poster/newspaper

4. Work on your project: After you’ve gotten approval for your project, with the information you have and the medium you picked, get to work and give yourself deadlines to make sure your project gets done on time without rushing.

Grading: You will be graded on creativity (how interesting, fun, and thoughtful were you?), completeness (did you say everything there is about this contribution?), accuracy (did you get your facts straight and emphasize how this contribution changed Western society?) AND presenting it to your class.

Project Deadline: November 14th
Approval deadline: Sept. 16th

MS 3 History Project: Final Requirements

NOTE: You will be given this as a handout, but I wanted you to have it available here as well.

As an accumulation of your 20 hours of volunteering, you will need to do the following to receive a passing grade in History this year.

Portfolio:
You will create several written reports, which will include the following:
1. A history of the organization that you are volunteering with.
This includes how they came in to being, the major highlights in what brought about the need of it, and any other organizations that it evolved from. This should be at least one page typed.

2. A brief explanation of the organization’s purpose and facets of work.
This is to be a two-page clear explanation of what the organization’s involvement in their work entails, such as what different areas of their field they engage in. Please be specific enough on this but not overly detailed.

3. A detailed description of what a typical day of volunteering/shadowing was like for you. (One to two pages)

4. A brief research paper on the social justice issue that your organization tries to handle. You can write this in conjunction with #2 or #1. This paper needs to include statistics and facts about this particular problem in society. This is addressing the problem(s), not the solution. Make sure you create a bibliography of your sources. This needs to be at least two typed pages

4. Interview: Conduct an interview with your contact person or another person you’ve worked with this year. Come up with a series of questions that you think are appropriate to learn more about how and why this person chose to affiliate with this organization. Type up the interview questions and the answers, and then summarize your thoughts and opinions based on the answers you received.

5. Pictures: Please include either pictures of your time volunteering, or of the work of the organization. You can use, with permission, pictures off of the websites that address the issue as well.

Presentation:
After you have written the above reports, you will need to take the information and create a presentation that is interesting, creative, and informative. Your presentation needs to be at least 7 minutes, and include visual aids, handouts and a creative and well-prepared talk with some of each of the elements of your portfolio. There will be a brief opportunity for your class mates to ask you questions about your presentation and your volunteer time.

Your final grade for this project will be in equal parts the portfolio, the volunteer hours you have been/are turning in, and the presentation.

MS1-2 History: Students can choose one of several extra credit projects to complete over break (or the week after break--due Fri. Jan 7th)--
1. model of trenches...this must fit historical accuracy, be clear, and labeled.
2. poster board with pictures and explanations of the weapons used in WW1
3. model of U-Boats or of war in the air and type of planes involved in dog fights.
4. another project of your creation depicting something of WW1 that we've already talked about.

All: Remember that you can still complete missing work, or the assignments on your progress reports that are currently blank will turn in to zeros and count against you. Please let me know if you have any questions.

You need to know the definitions from the chapter: socialism, yellow journalism, muckraker, populism, free silver, conservation, suffrage, etc. Make sure you can also explain certain economic factors and terms, such as inflation and the difference between socialism, populist, democratic and republican parties. Concepts to know (email me if you have questions or don't understand)-- the need for the reform movements, the situation for women and African Americans, the populist movement, the conditions of cities, politics, business, etc.
