MS 3 History Test Study Guide (Civil Rights)

Please review the following people: Medgar Evers, Gandhi, Bull Connor, Thurgood Marshall, Malcolm X, Orval Faubus, Fannie Lou Hamer, James Meredith (first African American student at the University of Mississippi), Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, John Lewis, Stokely Carmichal, Elijah Muhammad, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson (presidential dealing with civil rights movement) Be familiar with the following terms & events: freedom schools, sit-ins, lynchings, Selma freedom marches, Montgomery bus boycott, civil disobedience, SNCC, SCLC, NAACP, Jim Crow Laws, freedom riders, KKK, 'black power', riots of '64, MFDP, Brown v. Board of Ed, Plessy v. Ferguson, 'Little Rock 9', Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights Act, Black Panther party, Poor People's Campaign, March on Washington, Letters from Birmingham Jail, 'I have a Dream' speech. You should be able to answer the following questions in detail: 1.What different cycles took place in the Civil Rights Movement, and why? Which 'phase' was the most successful? 2. How did legislation in the 50's and 60's change equality for African Americans? 3. Does equal civil rights for all races in America today ensure equal treatment? Why or why not? 4. Leadership of civil rights activists differed in their approaches. Explain how two different leaders approached attempting change and how successful were they with these attempts? 5. Mississippi Burning was an interesting movie of how FBI agents even differed in their approach of ideas. Why was protocol as usual ineffective in their search--what did you learn about the culture of that state in this time period? Remember format is the same as usual: matching, definitions, multiple choice, short answer.
